2009 sees Earthoil enter the fair trade world with both Earthoil's Indian and Kenyan grower projects achieving Fair for Life status from IMO (Insitute of Marketecology) in March this year. Earthoil is very proud of this achievement and the 'Fair for Life' certification is a tangible acknowledgement of the commitment to fair trade principles which Earthoil has practiced over the years.
Fair for Life is a brand neutral third party certification programme for social accountability and fair trade in agricultural, manufacturing and trading operations. To achieve Fair for Life certification Earthoil had to ensure a number of criteria were met including: good working conditions, respecting core labour rights and making sure that fair relationships existed between all parties involved. Both the Kenyan and Indian projects received a full audit by IMO prior to the award.
The fair trade certification means that Earthoil is the first company to offer to market certified organic and fair trade organic essential oils. Earthoil's mint project in Uttar Pradesh, India now includes over 600 small-scale farmers and from this project Earthoil can offer bulk quantities of organic and fair trade certified; peppermint, cornmint (arvensis), spearmint - as well as menthol crystals and some very exciting mint oil blends. As a result, Earthoil is the largest supplier of mint oil products of this type in the world.
Earthoil's Mount Kenya tea tree project is Earthoil's second largest grower project with over 500 farmers. Also now certified 'Fair for Life' Earthoil is increasing its production capacity in Kenya so that it can offer bulk amounts of organic tea tree, lemongrass and palmarosa in the very near future.
