The knowledge that product has been traded with consideration to grower welfare, and with fully-traceable origins, is central to the corporate social responsibility mission of many of Earthoil's clients. Earthoil understands this and has always been committed to the principles of fair and ethical trading. It is this commitment that allows Earthoil to maintain a unique position in the market.
In all of its community-grower projects, Earthoil is involved from the ground up - in the selection of planting materials, the cultivation methods, harvesting and processing - seeking always to maximise yields while maintaining organic integrity. Protection of the environment is a central theme in all of these projects, as is respect for the people, demonstrated by pursuing fair prices, farmer education and informed project selection.
Earthoil has made a big commitment to pursuing independent fair trade certification for as many of its community-grower projects over the coming year as possible. This includes:
Earthoil's Mount Kenya project - organic borage and essential oil crops involving over 200 farmers.
Earthoil's Indian peppermint project - organic peppermint, spearmint and corn mint involving over 500 small-scale farmers.
Earthoil's support for the SEOBI project in the Northern Province and Eastern Cape region of South Africa - organic rose geranium, peppermint, lemon balm and marjoram, to name a few.
The process is very demanding and thorough and, once achieved, will validate a principle Earthoil has recognised right from the beginning - transparency and ethical operation provide long-term benefit for Earthoil's grower-partners worldwide.
